Checklist for Planning Your Trip and General Group Information
1. Before your visit:
· Develop a pre-visit lesson with students. Use materials that arrive with your program confirmation.
· Urge students to ask questions during their visit to the Sanctuary.
· Review Bus Parking Instructions with bus driver.
· Review what to bring with the children and chaperones.
2. What to bring:
· Sturdy walking shoes
· Pack lunch and daypack for hiking—remember that all visitors must pack out lunch remains, beverage containers and other garbage.
· Water bottle or other beverage container that can be easily carried in and packed out.
· Proper clothing for the weather, preferably layered.
· Field guides and other Hawk Mountain Sanctuary education material.
3. At the Sanctuary:
· Allow extra time to help ensure you arrive on schedule. Call the Visitor Center at 610-756-6961 if you expect to arrive late. In case of questionable weather call to discuss options. Rain dates may be available.
· Groups arriving for Guided Programs should check in at the Common Room. See map.
· Groups registered for an introduction should arrive at the Visitor Center . See map.
4. Fee Payment:
· Guided Programs: Upon arrival, total the exact number of students and adults, write that number on your confirmation sheet, and present the correct fee in a single cash or check payment to the Sanctuary educator.
· Group Introduction: Pay program and trail fees at the Visitor Center Bookstore.
· The Sanctuary accepts organization checks, personal checks, VISA or MasterCard.
General Information
1. Sanctuary land and facilities:
· Most children take special delight in walking the trails, but please let your chaperones know the terrain is rugged.
· Restrooms are located at the Visitor Center , Common Room, on the education trail, near North and South Lookouts and next to the Amphitheater. See map.
· Lunches may be eaten at the lookouts, shelters, Common Room or at picnic tables in the Amphitheater. Bring your own lunches and beverages. The Sanctuary only sells light snacks and bottled water.
· A bookstore, gift shop and Wings of Wonder gallery are in the Visitor Center . The gallery is downstairs.
2. Sanctuary Citizenship:
· Please let your group know they will be sharing the Sanctuary with other visitors who have come to see wildlife and enjoy the quiet of nature.
· Help your group understand why loud voices and unruly behavior lesson the chances of seeing wild animals. Radios and loud noise are not permitted at the Sanctuary.
3. Review the following points with your students and chaperones before your visit:
· Whisper in the wild!! You will see more wildlife if you are quiet and alert.
· Keep together on lookouts and trails.
· Have one chaperone per 10 students.
· “Carry-in, carry-out” everything, including fruit remains. To help protect our wildlife, there are no trash receptacles on the Sanctuary.
· Be courteous to other visitors.
