Job Announcement: Director of Education


 

Hawk Mountain Sanctuary seeks a highly motivated, energetic professional to develop, plan and implement a broad range of education programs that support and share Hawk Mountain's raptor conservation mission.

Background:
As part of its long-range plan, Hawk Mountain aspires to become a national leader in raptor conservation education. The Director of Education will develop and manage all aspects of education programming at Hawk Mountain Sanctuary with an eye toward meeting this major organizational objective. This is a core program and senior staff position and will report directly to the President. 

Principal duties include:

  • Establish, refine and maintain the strategic direction of the education program.
  • Supervise education staff and volunteers, develop curriculum, coordinate program expansion, and oversee Hawk Mountain's Raptor Challenge initiative.
  • Develop formal and non-formal education programs and materials for school-based as well as on-site public programs.
  • Prepare education activities that can be used on-site as well as at other international watchsites and locations.
  • Supervise and coordinate visiting school groups and public weekend programs.
  • Evaluate and upgrade existing education programs as needed.
  • Work with the Director of Conservation Science to coordinate international intern training.
  • Work with Director of Volunteers to secure, train, and supervise education volunteers. 
  • Work with Board and staff on fundraising activities and ideas where appropriate.
  • Represent the Sanctuary at state, regional and national education meetings.
  • Supervise the care, maintenance, and training of the Sanctuary's non-releasable education raptors.  Oversee training of staff, interns, and volunteers in proper and safe handling of these birds in education programs.
  • Maintain Hawk Mountain Sanctuary's federal and state permits for live raptor and museum specimens.
  • Respond to questions from the public about Hawk Mountain, bird of prey and/or general natural history .
  • Fill in or teach where necessary to keep programs flowing smoothly.
  • Prepare and manage annual education budget.
  • Conduct professional performance reviews of education staff
  • Other related duties as assigned by the President.

Requirements:

  • Master's degree in education or natural sciences strongly preferred

    Minimum five years experience in nature or conservation science education in a formal or informal setting

    Proven ability to develop curriculum appropriate for K-12 through college level

    Experience supervising staff essential

    Excellent interpersonal, written communication and computer skill a must

    Physically able to hike at least one mile over rocky terrain, possibly several times per day

    Experience converting technical research data into age-appropriate educational activities a plus

    Ability to lift 40 to 50 lbs, associated with transport and handling of live birds, models, and their containers

    Familiarity with the latest information technology systems and their broad implications for education required

    Ability to stay abreast of the latest teaching tools and trends, particularly their applications to environmental education.
