Groups: Explore-on-Your-Own at Hawk Mountain
Hawk Mountain is designed as an explore-on-your-own facility and so your scout, social, birding, student, or other group can have a great day outdoors without the added cost of a program. The key to success is in the planning:
General Group Info Specific to Student Groups Difference Between a Wildlife Sanctuary and a Public Park Tips for your Self-Guided Visit Guide to the North Lookout Trail Downloadable Trail Map and Hiking Information Trail fees, Directions
General Group Information: 1. Register your group as early as possible by calling the bookstore at 610-756-6961 between 9 am-5 pm daily. Be prepared to share the estimated number in your group (adults and children), one or more possible dates, and contact information. This step qualifies your group for a discount on trail admission and also ensures you don't end up sharing hte lookout on the same day as several other groups.
2. Group discounts are only available to pre-registered groups on a first-come, first-served basis, and to those groups who pre-register at least two weeks in advance.
3. On busy spring and fall weekdays we may suggest an alternative date for visiting in order to limit the total number of groups present.
4. Sorry, pre-registered rain dates are not allowed. If your group cancels due to inclement weather, you may reschedule for another available date at the time of the cancellation.
5. Upon arrival, your group organizer should report directly to the Visitor Center, provide the bookstore staff with the exact number in your group and pay. Payments may be cash, check, or credit card.
6. Your entire group will then meet the "Group Greeter" (pending availability) at the Information Pavilion. He or she will outline Sanctuary guidelines and answer any questions before you hit the trail.
Student Groups: 1. Hawk Mountain requires one chaperone per 10 students.
2. As a courtesy to other visitors and for safety reasons, only 30 students and three chaperones may enter the bookstore at one time. Large groups must take turns. Take the time to form small groups before your trip and 'regroup' when you exit your bus. Stagger leaving the bus area, leaving a few minutes between each smaller group.
3. Be sure to review with students the importance of a wildlife sanctuary versus a public park, and double-check that each student is properly dressed.
4. Remind students that Hawk Mountain is a carry-in, carry-out facility and has no trashcans. Each visitor is responsible to carry his or her own trash back out.
