Appalachian Trail (AT) and the Pinnacle/Pulpit Rock AT is accessible from Hawk Mountain Sanctuary's Blue Trail, about 3 miles from Visitor Center. You can also access the AT on the car approach to the Sanctuary by turning left at the School Bus Shelter near Eckville at the base of Hawk Mountain (Berks County side; turn into the second unmarked drive to the Game Lands parking area and check posted map. The Pinnacle is a 5-mile hike from the parking area. No facilities, no charge. Note: There is also easy access to the AT near Hamburg off Rt 61, north of I-78 and south of Port Clinton.
Blue Rocks Campground Trails Access to Pinnacle/Pulpit Rock for $2 via a 2-mile trail. This trail is steep but much shorter than AT access as described above. View of Blue Rocks boulder field. Turn off Blue Rocks Road or Sousley Rd on Rt. 143 N (south of Hawk Mountain); follow signs to campground.
State Game Lands #106 Three miles west of Hawk Mountain Sanctuary. Several hiking trails, one leading to Port Clinton Fire Tower. One of these is a very scenic trail following Little Schuylkill River at the end of Rockland Rd above Drehersville as you approach Hawk Mountain. No charge, no facilities. Seasonal hunting. No hunting on Sundays. West on Hawk Mountain Rd. 2 miles; take hairpin left before crossing Drehersville bridge and railroad at bottom of Mountain; parking lots on left.
Leaser Lake 15 miles northeast of Hawk Mountain Sanctuary. Lehigh County-PA Fish Commission park. Hiking, biking, fishing, picnicking; seasonal facilities, no charge. East on Hawk Mountain Rd.; left on Rt. 143 N 3.5 miles to the first of three entrances on left along Rt. 143.
Locust Lake State Park 19 miles north of Hawk Mountain Sanctuary in Weiser State Forest. Locust Lake State Park has 7 miles of trails that loop through wooded and open areas. Paved biking trail available. No charge, seasonal facilities. Camping available seasonally for charge. West on Hawk Mountain Rd.; left on Rt. 895 W; right on Rt. 61 N; Rt. 209 to park entrance.
Weiser State Forest 5 miles from Hawk Mountain Sanctuary. Entrance road leads to Port Clinton Fire Tower & trails. No charge, no facilities. West on Hawk Mountain Rd.; left on Route 895 W; left on Route 61 S 5 miles entrance is on left, but accessed by U-turn by continuing .5 miles to Port Clinton.
Bake Oven Knob About 20 miles east of Hawk Mountain Sanctuary near New Tripoli. Bake Oven Knob is an excellent site to observe fall migration. A 0.6 mile rocky walk leads to two rocky outcroppings on the Kittatinny Ridge. No charge, no facilities. Follow Hawk Mountain Rd. east 7 miles; 9 miles on Rt. 143 N to New Tripoli; Rt. 309 N for 2 miles; turn right on Mountain Rd. for 3 miles; left to Bake Oven Rd., left continuing on Bake Oven Rd.; right at "Y" (turns to gravel); bear right at next intersection; parking lot on right at top of mountain.
Second Mountain Hawk Watch About 30 miles southwest of Hawk Mountain Sanctuary. Viewing point adjoins parking area. No charge, no facilities. Hawk Mountain Rd.; left on Route 895 to Route 61 S; I-78 W for 25 miles to I-81 S -- Exit 29 (Indiantown Gap North); at Texaco station (1 mi), turn left at Second Mountain Hawk Watch sign; follow signs to top of mountain, 2.5 miles; parking on right.
Militia Hill 80 miles southeast of Hawk Mountain Sanctuary. Five miles west of Philadelphia in Fort Washington State Park. Lookout platform next to parking area is accessible to disabled. Bring lawn chairs/blankets. No charge. Picnic tables, limited facilities. East on Hawk Mountain Rd. to 143 S; I-78 E to 309 S; Exit Rt 73 W (Church Road) to Fort Washington State Park; on Militia Hill Rd.
Baer Rocks Drive to the parking lots at Bake Oven Knob. Then walk southwest (in the opposite direction for visiting the Knob) on the Appalachian Trail to a grove of hemlocks and other trees through which the boulder pile can be seen to the right about 200 feet north of the trail. No facilities. No Charge.
