Ph.D. Wildlife Biology. Joined Hawk Mountain in 2021.
After completing her 2014 Conservation Science Traineeship at Hawk Mountain, Rebecca went on to receive her master’s studying the nesting behavior of broad-winged hawks then immediately pursued her Ph.D. studying snowy owl ecology and survival rate in winter, which research suggests is a critical time in this species’ life. Her project will shed light on this less-studied period of their annual cycle, significantly increasing our understanding of its ecology and, ultimately, its conservation. Rebecca joined the staff full time in 2021, serving as biologist in the Sanctuary’s new American kestrel research, the expanded broad-winged hawk study, and examining status of snowy owls globally. She serves as a mentor to trainees and assists in all areas of conservation science outreach and research.
