Juvenile Cooper's Hawk by Bill Moses

An immature Cooper’s Hawk (Astur cooperii) dropped in at the Visitor Center Feeders during the Breakfast with the Birds Event!

Lucky for our visitors, the hunt was not successful… this time!

Cooper’s hawks are known to frequent bird feeders, but they aren’t looking for sunflower seeds! Their preferred prey includes songbirds, squirrels, and other rodents, all of which feed at birdfeeders. In fact, Cooper’s hawks are well-adapted to urban hunting environments and are one of the most commonly seen diurnal raptors in backyards across Pennsylvania. They can also be found in more natural woodland habitats and forests, like Hawk Mountain.
