Eastern Comma Butterfly
Posted on in Recent Sightings by Hawk Mountain
On March 9th, the temperatures climbed to 70° F on the Mountain. At South Lookout, an eastern comma butterfly (Polygonia comma) was spotted.
Comma butterflies have wings with scalloped edges and cryptic coloring to camouflage themselves in dead leaves while hibernating. They are known for emerging in spring, but are commonly first spotted in April. This is a sign that temperatures have been warmer than usual.
