Eastern Teaberry
Posted on in Recent Sightings by Hawk Mountain
This Eastern Teaberry (Gaultheria procumbens) was seen blooming just off the Silhouette Trail, a beautifully delicate sight easily missed by the nonobservant visitor. Look for a small, low-growing shrub with bell-shaped white flowers. The leaves are ovular and evergreen, although they do redden in the cold winter months. Also red is the fruit they produce, a berry with a holly-like appearance but is edible and has a slight minty flavor.
