Mourning Cloak on a tree with wings spread

Mourning Cloak (Nymphalis antiopa) butterflies were seen at Owl’s Head. Mourning Cloaks are native to North America and Eurasia. The upper side of their wings are a deep maroon with iridescent blue spots and a beautiful bright yellow edge. The Mourning Cloak can live up to 10-12 months, one of the longest life spans found in butterflies!
