Old Man of the Woods
Posted on in Recent Sightings by Hawk Mountain
The unmistakable dark gray and black caps of Old Man of the Woods (Strobilomyces strobilaceus) have begun to appear around the Sanctuary. The scruffy appearance lends to its comical namesake and makes it one of the few mushrooms that is hard to misidentify. Old man of the woods is edible, although not popular among foragers, and is common in forests throughout Europe and North America. They can be seen August through October.
