Ruby-crowned Kinglet

Posted on in Recent Sightings by Hawk Mountain

We have been seeing more and more Ruby-crowned Kinglets (Corthylio calendula) around Hawk Mountain, both at the Lookouts and in the Native Habitat Garden. These tiny songbirds are currently migrating south along the Kittatinny Corridor, and while some may overwinter in our forest, many will continue on. These birds are olive-gray with a thick, white eyering and a white wingbar. Their namesake ruby crown is only visible when the bird is agitated. Listen for their distinctive two-part call as they move quickly, foraging through the underbrush.
