Southern Red-backed Vole
Posted on in Recent Sightings by Hawk Mountain
A pair of trainees saw a familiar face at North Lookout: the Southern Red-backed Vole (Myodes gapperi). These herbivorous rodents can be found foraging among the rocks at the lookout. Their diets include fruits, berries, seeds, nuts, some plant life, fungi, and the occasional invertebrate, as well as food scraps left from visitors. They also serve as food for many different predators around the sanctuary such as foxes, shrews, minks, hawks, and weasels.
