Identification: Stocky, large kite with big head, broad, paddle-shaped wings and tail. Adult males are dark grey with grey and white barred chest, and two white broad tail bands. Adult females are brown, rufous, and white barred chest and two white broad tail bands. Typically, juveniles have variable brown barring chest pattern, brown backs and heads. Black individuals are rare. Adults have only one white tail band and juveniles have two.

Migratory behavior: Soars extensively and is frequently found flying solitary or in small loose groups mixed with other raptors. When soaring, its broad, rounded wings are diagnostic.

Remarks: Uncommon migrant, but this species migrates in higher numbers, sometimes up to 4,000 in fall in the District of Toledo, Belize.
