Esmerejón, Halcón palomero.
Identification: Small, stocky, dark falcon with pointed wings, heavy dark streaks on underside, and barred tail. Adult males are blue-grey above. Adult females and juveniles are dark-brown above.
Flight behavior: Strong, fast, direct flaps, but alternate flaps and glides in migration. Solitary flyer, but occasionally soars with other raptors using thermals.
Remarks: Three subspecies occur in North America. In the region, Taiga Merlin (F. columbarius columbarius) is the most common, but the other two subspecies are likely to occur, at least in low numbers.
