Turkey Vulture

Zopilote aura, Zochinche, Noneca, Nopo de cabeza roja, Jote de cabeza roja, Aura Tiñosa, Aura Gallipavo, Urubú de cabeza roja, Gallinazo.
Identification: Large, dark brown carrion-eater with a small head (red in adults and grey in juveniles), with long tail and wings. In flight silver-grey flight feathers contrast against the dark brown body and upper wings. Holds wings above body in “V” shape.
Migratory behavior: Soaring bird with rare periods of strong flaps. Migrates in large flocks, often with other raptors. Relies on updrafts and thermals for flight.
Remarks: Autumn counts of this species represent almost half of the total raptors counted during fall migration in the region. Most of the migrants observed are from western and central North America.
